In an attempt to regain our sanity, Dennis and I left Tuesday morning for a short trip, for the first time in 3 1/2 years. . .

On Our Way! (South Tunnel- Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel)
You could say we “went to the beach“, but really? We didn’t “go to the beach“. We went to Virginia Beach. . . but since neither of us are big on (getting in) ocean water (unless it looks like the crystal clear waters of Bermuda or something like that), we spent our time there doing other things we like.
First, we went by my mom’s grave in Hertford, NC. That’s another hour and a half south of VB. Taking Route 17 South for most of the ride down, I noticed “caution bear crossing” signs!
OMG! BEAR crossing! Remind me not to get out of my car at night there. Yeah. Anyway, I never have trouble finding my mom’s gravesite. Its right behind the high school I went to for the first half of my Jr. year of high school. Its also where my brother Mike went for his Jr. year of high school 10 years prior. (I think. . . . I mean, I know he went there, I’m guessing he went as a Jr.)

Perquimans County High School
We even had the same principal! Anyway, I was disappointed that the grave marker was a bit grown over. Next time I go, I’m going to make sure I have some kind of tool with me to cut back the crabgrass or whatever it was. My hands just didnt do a good job, but I did what I could. Mostly the cemetery looked nice tho. We also made a quick trip about 10 minutes from Hertford to what used to be a summer community called Snug Harbor.

Crossroads
Its located right on the Albemarle Sound and there’s water everywhere!! My folks used to have property there that we would vacation at most summers, and it seems to have built up to a regular year round community. We drove by my parents’ old property and up and down some of the streets. We wanted to go to a restaurant down there called Anglers Cove for dinner, but it was, uh, a bit beyond closed. hehehehe. I guess you could say we were a “day late” on that one!

Anglers Cove
At this point, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out (much to my sons and husbands’ chagrin) that Hertford, NC is where Jim “Catfish” Hunter, Hall of Fame pitcher for the New York Yankees, was born and raised. His brothers coached my brothers in little league and even got them autographed baseballs and made guest appearances occasionally. Catfishs’ brother Waylon taught me driver’s ed in 11th grade :) So when I came across this

Catfish Hunter's final resting place
I just couldn’t resist capturing it for my blog. (Sorry, guys!)
Wednesday we spent hours lounging around the pool, and that was like my own slice of heaven! The weather was absolutely beautiful; hot, sunny - with barely a cloud in the sky! Then we walked about (at least!) 4 miles of the boardwalk

Va Beach Boardwalk
before we went to our favorite steakhouse for dinner. (The LoneStar Steakhouse, its excellent. If you have never been, you should definitely go!)
Thursday, we spent a large part of the day walking through the Virginia Marine Science Museum, which has expanded exponentially since we were last there in, possibly, 1997. We got to see the rays get fed, which was interesting. . . and a very cool IMAX movie (”Deep Sea“) about the coral reefs and their inhabitants. Always weird when you feel like those things are coming right at you!! We also enjoyed the marsh walk where we got to see a couple egrets
After the aquarium/museum we headed North to a DC suburb and my friend Pam’s house for the night. We watched the RNC, surveyed the crowd shots for my niece Ellen, who is an elected delegate from the State of Louisiana, and heatedly discussed the pro’s and con’s of the folks who want our votes for the next presidency (Republican and Democrat).
Friday, we headed off to the Smithsonian/National Zoo in Washington DC. (With several more miles of walking, much up hill!) We have not been there since Jared was 3, I think. . . and since he’s 19, you could say its been a while! I felt like a kid. :) The elephants were huge. The zoo is in the middle of renovations - one major one being the building of “Elephant Trails” which is an enclosure that is probably about 5x larger than what they currently have, and the elephants will be able to live in a more natural setting, as family groups, without separate enclosures. It wont be done until 2011 though. Then I even went in the reptile house so Dennis could check out the snakes,

one of many
tho I kept my distance while he got up close and personal. <shiver> However, my personal favorite was definitely the Panda’s.

Panda relaxing
They even came out in all the heat (or maybe it was just one Panda that kept going in and coming out? It was hard to tell.) So cute!! Of course, conservation, education and restoring life to endangered species is part of what the National Zoo is all about. Amongst the Panda habitat, we learned about bamboo, the food of choice for pandas. This remark was also on the literature:

Panda food, beware!
There was a lot of renovation going on but there were still plenty of animals to visit and the animals seemed happy and looked healthy, and that was a good thing to see. There was a very feisty, large Chesapeake Bay blue crab that wanted to eat the feeding tube after the piece of shrimp he was fed and just was not going to give in, and in the end, grabbed the tube like a samurai! It was comical!
We decided to head home a day early because of Hurricane Hanna and the fact that we have to cross the Chesapeake Bay bridge to get home (dont particularly like to cross in high winds and rain, if they even let you, depending on the severity of the storm and the timing of when we would get there to cross it). So, we headed for home on Friday afternoon, after our trip to the zoo. Amazingly, the rain started, literally, the minute we set a tire on the eastern shore!

The rain begins
We are topping off our vacation by being extremely lazy and indulging ourselves in absolutely everything and totally nothing. We plan on doing only what is necessary to get ready for the upcoming week. Jared did a fantastic job of keeping the house straight while we were gone, so our list of things to get done is pleasantly short.
(If you want to see the rest of our vacation pictures, you can see them here.)
Monday morning, at 0445, the vacation will come to an abrupt halt and the real world will open its beastly eyes, and the treadmill will begin. Again.
Did I mention my classes start on Monday too? Yeah. Talk about aggressive beginnings!
